Mrs. Edwin James

Mrs. Edwin James was the pen name of Mary Ann James, an English novelist who was born in 1819 and died in 1890. She was the daughter of a clergyman and was educated at home. She married Edwin James, a barrister, in 1841. James published her first novel, The False Heir, in 1849. She went on to write over 30 novels, including Wanderings of a Beauty (1850), A Woman's Thoughts about Women (1853), and The Heiress of Bruges (1860). Her novels were popular in their day and were praised for their strong female characters and their realistic portrayal of Victorian society. James was also a prolific short story writer. Her short stories were published in magazines such as The Cornhill Magazine and The Saturday Review. She also wrote a number of plays, which were never produced. She was a talented writer who made a significant contribution to Victorian literature. Her novels and short stories are still enjoyed by readers today.
