Susan Anne Livingston Ridley Sedgwick

Susan Anne Ridley Sedgwick was a nineteenth century American writer known for her contributions to children’s literature and moral fiction. Born in Stockbridge Massachusetts to Matthew Ridley and Catherine Livingston his second wife she grew up within an intellectually active family environment that valued education culture and social responsibility. Her writing focused on youth instruction character formation and ethical development often emphasizing perseverance empathy and personal discipline. Sedgwick’s children’s novels reflected domestic life learning and moral growth presenting everyday situations as opportunities for guidance and reflection. In addition to writing she was also an accomplished artist and produced a watercolor on ivory portrait of a formerly enslaved person who worked for her family demonstrating her interest in personal history and human experience. She was the partner of Theodore Sedgwick and the mother of Theodore Sedgwick. Her extended family included notable descendants such as Arthur G. Sedgwick Susan Ridley Sedgwick and Sara Price Ashburner Sedgwick as well as great grandchildren Susan Ridley Sedgwick Swann Hammond and Eliot Norton.
