Ellen Glasgow – November 21, 1945) was an American novelist born on April 22, 1873 and died in Richmond, Virginia. She is regarded as one of the major literary figures of the American South, known for her realistic and socially conscious portrayals of Southern life during periods of transition and change.
Glasgow’s fiction often examines class structure, gender roles, and the decline of traditional Southern aristocracy in the post–Civil War era. Her writing is marked by psychological depth and careful attention to social detail, presenting characters shaped by both personal desire and societal expectations. Rather than romanticizing the South, she offered a more critical and modern perspective on its cultural and moral complexities.
