Jonathan Scott was an English orientalist and scholar, born in Shrewsbury in 1754 to Mary Sandford and Jonathan Scott. His family background included grandparents Dorothy Waring and John Scott, and great-grandparents Adam Waring and Dorothy Wood, reflecting a lineage rooted in England. Scott developed a deep interest in languages, culture, and literature, which led him to become a prominent translator and interpreter of Middle Eastern texts. He is best known for his translation of the Arabian Nights, a work that introduced European readers to the richness of Middle Eastern folklore, imaginative storytelling, and ethical reflection. Throughout his life, he combined scholarly rigor with a fascination for cultural exchange, bringing attention to the narratives, morals, and fantastical elements of Arabic literature. His personal life included a partnership with Anne Austin, while his professional work emphasized the importance of cross-cultural understanding and the preservation of literary heritage.
