Alfred John Church born 29 January 1829 in London was an English classical scholar educator and author who died 27 April 1912. Educated at Kings College London and Lincoln College Oxford he took holy orders serving as assistant master at Merchant Taylors School from 1857 to 1870 then headmaster at Henley on Thames Royal Grammar School and King Edward VI School Retford. Later professor of Latin at University College London from 1880 to 1888 he collaborated on translations of Tacitus and Plinys Letters.
