About the Book

Rise of the new west 1819-1829 examines the pivotal decade that reshaped American identity through migration, political realignment, and economic transformation. The westward movement following the War of 1812 marked more than territorial expansion—it symbolized the emergence of a distinct American spirit rooted in opportunity, self-determination, and regional pride. This period witnessed the tension between nationalism and sectionalism, as the frontier population influenced legislative shifts and broader democratic reforms. The western territories evolved into influential political forces, challenging Eastern dominance and encouraging policy that addressed infrastructure, land use, and financial institutions. Simultaneously, economic ambitions were driven by internal improvements and the Market Revolution, spurring debates over tariffs, banking, and slavery. Turner emphasizes the formation of a new political consciousness shaped by frontier values, as communities developed institutions reflecting both independence and interdependence. The decade became a laboratory for democratic experimentation and a stage for regional conflict that would foreshadow future national divisions. The book underscores how environmental pressures, social mobility, and political ambition coalesced in shaping an increasingly complex American republic.

About Author

Frederick Jackson Turner

Frederick Jackson Turner was a prominent American historian born on November 14, 1861, in Portage, Wisconsin, to Andrew Jackson Turner and Mary Olivia Hanford Turner. He began his academic career at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, teaching there until 1910 before moving to Harvard University. Turner is best known for his influential frontier thesis, which argued that the American frontier was central to shaping the nation’s democracy, character, and institutions. This idea transformed the way historians understood American development and identity. He trained many PhD students who later became notable historians, significantly impacting the field of American history. Turner’s work explored themes such as sectionalism, nationalism, and the effects of westward expansion on political and social structures. Throughout his career, he received several honors, including the Pulitzer Prize for History. Turner’s scholarship helped define early 20th-century historical thought in the United States. He died on March 14, 1932, in San Marino, California, leaving a lasting legacy through his writings and students.
