About the Book

Piracy: A romantic chronicle of these days follows a solitary figure attempting to reconcile inner turmoil with the external glitter of post-war London. The narrative traces a deep emotional journey shaped by trauma, alienation, and the desire for intimacy in a rapidly shifting social landscape. At the story’s outset, a young man sits alone in a quiet restaurant, weighed down by a recent expulsion and the loss of a limb in war. Despite wealth and physical comfort, he remains estranged from the world around him, questioning the meaning of success and personal identity. His interactions with those around him only highlight a profound sense of disconnection, and his introspective mood reflects a broader cultural uncertainty. The setting of London, with its blend of opulence and emptiness, mirrors his internal conflict. The novel explores how the ideals of romance and social belonging are complicated by personal loss and societal upheaval. Through this character’s internal dialogue and encounters, the work offers a nuanced meditation on identity, disillusionment, and the aching need for genuine connection in a world marked by performance and post-war adjustment.

About Author

Michael Arlen

Michael Arlen was a multifaceted writer known for his work as an essayist, short story writer, novelist, playwright, and scriptwriter. Born in 1895 in Ruse, Bulgaria, to Sarkis Kouyoumdjian, he eventually gained prominence while living in England. His literary career flourished during the 1920s, a period during which he became particularly well known for his stylish prose and portrayal of the sophisticated yet troubled post-World War I generation. His most acclaimed work, The Green Hat, was published in 1924 and captured the tone and mood of a disillusioned society marked by glamour and tragedy. His writings often reflected the tensions of modern life, social conventions, and personal identity, resonating with readers seeking meaning in a rapidly changing world. He married Countess Atalanta Mercati in 1928 and had two children, including Michael J. Arlen. Despite his success in England, he eventually moved to the United States, where he continued writing until his death in New York in 1956 at the age of 60. Arlen's legacy remains tied to his ability to dramatize the elegance and existential anxiety of his era.
