Ben. E. Rich

In the early twentieth century, Ben E. Rich (1855-1913) was a major missionary and spokesman for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). He was also a publisher, novelist, and ardent political player. Rich came into the world on the seventh of November 1855, the child of Charles C. Rich and Sarah D. Pea, a multiple (polygamist) wife. From 1881 to 1883, he was a missionary for the LDS Church in Great Britain. He oversaw the exodus of Church members from Britain to the United States for a portion of this time. He worked as a salesman for Z.C.M.I. before becoming the Goden Equitable Co-operative Store's store manager. In 1893, he moved to Rexburg, Idaho, and established the Rexburg Press, afterwards renamed the Silver Hammer and relocated to St. Anthony, Idaho. Rich is also the author of Mr. Durant of Salt Lake City: That Mormon. Rich was a prominent Republican and a friend of Theodore Roosevelt. He was appointed president of the Southern States Mission in 1898. Rich remained president of the newly constituted Middle States Mission in Washington, D.C. when the mission was divided two years later. When the president of the Southern States Mission died, the Middle States Mission was dissolved, and Rich was appointed to preside over the Southern States Mission once more.
