The book covers the period from the early 16th century, with the publication of Martin Luther's 95 Theses in 1517, to the outbreak of the Peasants' War in 1524. D'Aubigné provides a detailed account of the religious, political, and social factors that led to the Reformation, including the corruption and abuses of the Catholic Church, the rise of humanism, and the emergence of new forms of religious expression.
