Desiderius Erasmus known as Erasmus of Rotterdam, was a Dutch humanist, Catholic theologian, philologist, and one of the most influential scholars of the Northern Renaissance. Born around 28 October 1466 in either Rotterdam or Gouda in the Burgundian Netherlands, he was the son of Gerard Erasmus and Margaret. Educated in monastic schools, he became a leading intellectual figure in Europe, dedicated to classical learning, textual scholarship, and religious reform through education rather than conflict. Erasmus promoted Christian humanism, emphasizing moral renewal, reason, and a return to original biblical sources. His major works include In Praise of Folly and The Colloquies, where he used satire, dialogue, and irony to critique superstition, corruption, and rigid scholastic traditions. He also produced critical editions of the New Testament in Greek and Latin, which had a major impact on biblical studies and theology. Widely respected across Catholic and emerging Protestant circles, he corresponded with leading thinkers of his era while maintaining an independent stance during the Reformation.
