About the Book

Six modern women: Psychological sketches is a collection of psychological portraits examining the emotional and intellectual lives of six prominent women. Rather than celebrating only their accomplishments, the work investigates the internal conflicts they faced while navigating societal expectations. The author opens with a reflection on how personal fulfillment often eludes even the most outwardly successful women. The first profile centers on a woman known for her mathematical brilliance, exposing the deep loneliness and longing that shadowed her despite her academic acclaim. Each subsequent figure is presented as a study in contrast between public recognition and private struggle, illustrating the emotional costs of pioneering paths in art, science, and literature. The sketches suggest that while these women sought meaning beyond traditional domestic roles, they often found themselves torn between ambition and the societal need for conformity. Through this lens, the text questions the very definitions of progress and emancipation, offering a nuanced portrayal of inner lives marked by contradiction. The result is a sobering yet respectful exploration of modern womanhood shaped by resistance, introspection, and unfulfilled yearning.

About Author

Laura Marholm

Laura Katharina Marholm was a Baltic-German author known for her literary criticism, psychological biographies of women, and fiction. Born on 19 April 1854 in Riga, Latvia, she developed an early interest in the intellectual and emotional lives of women. Her work often reflected a New Woman perspective, engaging with feminist issues through a lens that emphasized personal fulfillment and psychological depth. Marholm’s approach to feminism was distinctive—while advocating for women's autonomy and intellectual freedom, she also portrayed marriage as a potential source of personal completion rather than oppression. This view positioned her uniquely within the feminist discourse of her time. Among her most notable works is a series of biographical sketches analyzing the emotional struggles and societal conflicts faced by prominent women. She emphasized internal conflict and self-awareness, portraying her subjects not just as symbols of progress, but as complex individuals navigating a restrictive world. Marholm married the Swedish writer Ola Hansson in 1889, and their intellectual partnership influenced her writings. She continued publishing essays, novels, and critical studies until her death in Latvia on 6 October 1928 at the age of 74.
