About the Book

Andersonville: A story of rebel military prisons Volume 1 is a powerful historical narrative that exposes the brutal realities of imprisonment during the American Civil War. Drawing from first-hand experience, the author recounts the inhumane conditions faced by Union soldiers confined within Confederate prisons such as Andersonville and Richmond. The book captures the physical torment, starvation, and disease endured by the captives, while also reflecting on the psychological resilience required to survive such dehumanizing circumstances. It opens with the author’s determination to document these experiences, not for vengeance, but as a testimony to history, ensuring that the sacrifices and suffering of those imprisoned are never forgotten. Through vivid and often harrowing depictions, the narrative explores the moral decay that allowed such atrocities to occur and contrasts it with moments of courage, compassion, and endurance among the prisoners. More than a personal memoir, it stands as a broader reflection on war’s cruelty and the endurance of the human spirit under extreme hardship.

About Author

John Mcelroy

John Mcelroy was an American author, journalist, soldier, and printer whose life was shaped by the profound experiences of the American Civil War. Born in 1846 in Greenup County, Kentucky, to parents whose names are not widely recorded, McElroy’s early years were marked by a developing interest in literature and printing. As a young man, he enlisted in the Union Army and was later captured, spending a long and harrowing period as a prisoner in the Confederate camp at Andersonville. These experiences deeply influenced his later work, particularly his renowned four-volume account Andersonville a story of rebel military prisons, which vividly portrays the suffering and endurance of captured soldiers. Following the war, McElroy built a successful career in journalism, contributing to various newspapers and using his platform to discuss social and political issues of the time. He also wrote The Red Acorn, a novel that further reflected his wartime experiences. McElroy’s writings combined factual documentation with emotional depth, preserving an important historical perspective. He died in 1929 at the age of 83.
