About the Book

Becket and other plays presents a dramatic exploration of power, conscience, and moral conflict through poetic stage works focused on authority and belief. The collection examines the tension between personal loyalty and institutional duty, emphasizing how ambition and conviction collide within positions of influence. Central ideas revolve around spiritual responsibility, political control, and the cost of standing by principle when allegiance is divided. The drama highlights inner struggle, portraying authority not as a source of certainty but as a burden shaped by doubt, sacrifice, and ethical pressure. Through elevated language and reflective dialogue, the plays explore how faith and governance interact, revealing the fragility of order when moral vision and worldly power diverge. The collection favors psychological depth over spectacle, encouraging reflection on responsibility, obedience, and resistance. Overall, the work presents drama as a space for examining ethical tension, portraying leadership as a test of integrity shaped by conscience rather than command.

About Author

Alfred Lord Tennyson

Alfred Lord Tennyson, 1st Baron Tennyson, was a prominent English poet whose work defined much of Victorian literary culture. Born in Somersby, Lincolnshire, in 1809, he showed early literary promise and went on to win the Chancellor's Gold Medal at Cambridge for his poem Timbuktu in 1829. Tennyson became Poet Laureate in 1850, succeeding William Wordsworth, and held the title for over four decades, during which he composed some of the most enduring poetry in the English language. His work often explored themes of heroism, loss, and the tension between faith and doubt, capturing the spirit and anxieties of the Victorian era. Some of his most famous poems include In Memoriam A.H.H., The Charge of the Light Brigade, and Ulysses. Tennyson was also deeply influenced by classical mythology, medieval legends, and the works of earlier poets such as Shakespeare and Keats. He was elevated to the peerage in 1884, becoming the first poet to accept a hereditary title. Tennyson passed away in 1892 in Lurgashall and was buried in Westminster Abbey’s Poets’ Corner, cementing his legacy as one of Britain’s greatest literary figures.
